Fashion from Islamic Art

My first college project, and my first look into the world of Islamic art

Islamic Inspiration

I was going through a box of old sketch books and it occurred to me that the first thing I designed at college was a bag inspired by Islamic art. I hadn’t become Muslim at that stage so I was looking at it from an outsiders perspective. This was quite a few years ago now, so it’s not the most ravishing thing I’ve ever made, but I still quite like it.

Experimentation

I think even then the Islamic aesthetic appealed to me, the stark juxtaposition of ornate organic forms against hard geometric lines is beautiful. Anyway I thought you’d like to take a little look.

I experimented quite a bit with embroidery and different textures trying to find something simple that also gave a sense of depth. I’ve come a long way in my understanding of Islam and of design. But I think it’s always interesting to go back to the beginning and look at it with hindsight. I hope you liked that little blast from my design past. it certainly brought back memories!
