Turning Japanese

Kimono are so nice to wear, especially the summer weight ones which are much lighter and less bulky
Vintage Love
I have a bunch of vintage Kimono picked up from a market in Japan by my mum. Normally I cut them up and use the fabric in other designs or use the shorter ones as dressing gowns. I absolutely love wearing them, they feel so feminine and comfortable. I wore the traditional style (as best as me and my sister could figure out) for my dad’s wedding, but it’s definitely not an everyday thing. So I decided to play around with ways of making it a bit more casual.
The Look
I took a plain base (jeans and a long t-shirt) and wore it over, belting it at the front. The cool thing is that you can feed the belt through the holes under the arms so it hangs totally loose at the back, perfect for hijabi’s. You can see what I mean better on some other photos (I’ll post them a bit later), but you can kind of see it in the first photo.

Islamic Inspiration: Keep the base simple for a more casual look.
What, Where?
I don’t really know when I’d wear this, bit too different for supermarket shopping! But maybe going to a museum or art exhibition, dinner etc. I tried some shorter styles which might be more casual, I’ll put them up soon inshAllah! I know you can get Kimono from ebay (what can’t you get from there!) but if you’re lucky enough to know anyone who’s going to Japan then there is so much choice and very inexpensive (about £10). I’ll let you know where the market is, I can’t remember off hand!

This is a very good idea. Thanks Hana. I will be looking for a vintage kimono if I ever get to go to Japan again. Do you think a kimono would look good over a plain black abaya?
Just had to text my Mum to find out
It’s in Sugamo Tokyo on the days of the month which end in 4 (4th, 14th, 24th). It starts from about 10am. Get there early if you do go because the good stuff gets snapped up!
A kimono would look stunning over a plain black abaya, especially for a more formal look. If you try it send me a photo!!
Very nice, mashAllah! I was just wondering what it would look like to wear kimono with hijab, so I googled “kimono hijabi,” and your blog came up!
Say, have you ever seen anyone wearing kimono in traditional style, with hijab? If so, how did it look? Just curious.
What about other ways of wearing kimono with hijab? I am wondering about some different sort of Eid fashions (something away from abayas, shalwar kameez and saris!)
