Diary of a Model in Syria

Vogue to Damascus: Diary of Stella Tennant on location
View of a City
So Stella Tennant went to Damascus for a Vogue shoot and they published her diary of the trip. One thing is for certain, Damascus is stunning! Tennant was honest about how she felt e.g. feeling like an outsider in what she was wearing- now she knows how we sometimes feel! Apart from the odd, minor faux pas “I am longing to meet a man with eight wives just to see what he looks like.” (I laughed when I saw that) her account was really interesting.
Wardrobe
Although the wardrobe for the shoot was definitely not Islamic (not that it was meant to be), I was glad that there weren’t any miniskirts!- “We are concious that their customs should be respected, which is fine by me”

Model in a Muslim City
Beautiful City, Beautiful people
I guess the people make the place after all, and she seemed to really love the atmosphere. You could some it up like she did “I’ve travelled all over the world as a model, I have never felt so much of a foreigner as I have here; and this trip has introduced me to this fascinating city and its people. In short, it has been the assignment of a lifetime.”

Where to read the article
It’s definitely well worth a read, even if just for the amazing photos of the city. It’s in this month’s British Vogue (May 2009). Available now, pretty much anywhere that sells magazines!

Why thank you so much for posting this one, Hana! Wallah it’s my lifelong dream to move to Syria and I’m actually working on it. I really got the out-of-place, outsider atmosphere just by looking at these pictures, and that just make me fall in love even deeper with Syria. Once again, thank you! <3
It was my pleasure! I hope you get to go inshAllah, if you do send me some photos I’d love to see!
Eight wives? since when do Syrians marry eight wives, let alone it being permissable in Islam? I appreciate your use of Damascus to display your fashion but please don’t make it seem as if Syria is such a backward country.
Nevertheless what you’re doing is a great thing i mean no disrespect but i just wanted to clarify that point.
