Dedicated to Samra

Islamic fashion has to be functional, especially when you’re a student. It’s a while since I studied and I wasn’t Muslim then. But when Samra asked me to do a post about Islamic ‘high-school’ style I thought it would be a good idea to see what I would have done differently as a Muslimah!

Doing Denim

As a hijabi you have to take in to consideration more than just how fashionable an outfit is. I used to live in jeans at college, they were much tighter than I would wear now so “ta daa” wide leg jeans are the solution! long sleeved tops are great as a base to wear under baggy t-shirts the more oversized the better. The way to make it not look like you shrunk 5 sizes since you got dressed tie knots and roll up the sleeves. You have instant casual chic!

Making your Mark

The white t-shirt from the first photo has been completely customized (I can post up the how-to later), and this is a great way to have a discreet statement in your outfit. Other ways to make a generic outfit unique is quirky jewellery, maybe junk shop finds or antique hand-me-downs.

Comfort First

It’s definitely important to feel comfortable, I walked for miles to and around college so for me that was a no. 1 priority. Layers and lightweight jackets are great so you can peel back the layers as you warm up!

Tunics can be worn over almost anything, perfect for layering

Tunics

Tunics are great for Muslim girls, they are loose and comfortable and can create so many different looks. If you love layering they are key pieces to add to any hijabi’s wardrobe. Don’t worry if the colours don’t totally match, it’s more about fusing together elements of the outfit. If you top and tail (wear the same colour headscarf and shoes or bottoms) then everything else will magically go together!

If you have a post of your own or a suggestion for me then email me, all the details are on the ’send tips and pics’ page.

Thanks for the post suggestion Samra, I hope you liked it!

Salaam Hana,
Just a note to ask for a video how to…as opposed to a photo how to…I just think the talking gives you a chance to better explain…

ASSWRB,
I was just wondering what are the trousers you are wearing with the purple tunic in the last pic where you are wearing a black hijab?

They’re some very old cargo style trousers from Miss Selfridge. I bought them about 10 years ago! Goes to show what goes around comes around.

I love the jeans you’re wearing in the first two pictures; all wide leg and baggy. Where did you get them and what’s the brand name? I’d love to find out.
