Artistic Influence

When I first started designing I didn’t know much about my extended family. It’s only been in the last few years and months that my fashion heritage has revealed itself. Because although both my parents are artists, fashion was never an influence growing up. After a trip to see her cousin my mum came back with this photograph and stories of a family fascination with fashion. The photo is of her cousin in a dress made by her cousins mother. Dress making has been in my family for generations it seems.

Keeping with tradition

I can still remember the old singer machine that I first learned to use; hand operated, no electricity required. It was passed down from my grandmother I think, and sparked that first light of a designer in me, although I think my attention was focused on making dresses for my teddy bears. Now in my petite studio surrounded by stacks of fabric, dress forms and random pattern pieces I feel proud to be part of this family tradition.

Wow! The dress is beautiful. And the photograph looks like a painting!

You`re lucky to be in that fashion-conscious kind of family.
