… And a Mini Make-Over

BBC hijab article

I was very pleasantly surprised to wake up and find myself along side Jana of Hijab Style and urban street-wear designer Sarah Elenany on the BBC world news homepage. When I did the piece I hadn’t thought it was going to be so mainstream (I did freak out slightly, watching myself on video though).

A big thanks to Shaimaa for putting it all together. There has been such an overwhelmingly good response, I can’t tell you what a difference it makes knowing there is support out there!

Behind The Scenes

It was such a long day of shooting, we really did set ourselves a challenge going for vintage. Any vintage addicts out there will know it can be so hit and miss, so to be safe I bought up a few high-street pieces. It turns out that I missed with the high-street pieces which she didn’t really like (ahh irony). I really wanted her to have something she loved, so in the end she picked out the main outfit (tunic and belt) and I styled it with a Maysaa headscarf and Made jewellery. A lot of people noticed how the outfit wasn’t reflective of my style which is true, but I think with styling it’s all about the personality of the stylee (yes… I did just make up a word).

I hope you guys liked it, and if you haven’t already seen it you can check it out here

I loved the short BBC video of you. I have looked on your website frequently for modest clothing ideas and even though I’m not Muslim, I have enjoyed how you have remained modest and fashionable at the same time. Hopefully with this BBC short the idea will become more and more popular.
Thanks

PS. really nice Maysaa scarf by the way – it looks so workable because of the coverage and the material (cant wait to own one!), and i could tell that you definitely did not choose that (unsightly, sorry) tunic dress :-)

its so weird how from following ur blog regularly(and i do mean daily)i kind of know what u mean and it actualy feels like i knw u as a person from reading ur posts so i could tell that the dress wasnt ur choice because it wasnot a reflection of ur indivual style
i wish u all the success in maysaa and am really dying to see what u come up with (knw it will be worth the wait)

I loved loved the interview. It was really well done all round. Good luck for Maysaa launch! Because you got the exposure right now, so alot of customers will be lining to get their hands on your lovely designs. (I asure you that I will be one of them.)

I am so glad for you, because I have followed your blog all the way back at the start of your blog and your posts were great and informative! Keep it up sister and inshallah will reward you with Jannah for what you have done to improve modest fashion!

Love Salma x

Hana, I just want to say what a pleasure it was meeting you in person and doing that piece with you. I couldn’t have chosen a better subject or stylist! I know some of your readers hated the dress ;) but like you said it was more about finding something that suited me:) And now I know how tricky vintage shopping is!! Funny though as I wore it to work and many of my colleagues wanted to know where I got it from and wanted to go buy one! Anyway I can’t wait for your launch I have a feeling I’ll be doing a lot of shopping!

Salam Sis Hana, mashaallah, you look amazing in the video and you have a wonderful sense of style :)

However, I have noticed that your wide-legged trousers are a tad too long and tend to brush on the sidewalks as you walk. I think you should be concerned that this might cause the pants to pick up najis from dirty places, so I would advise you to shorten the hem a little.

Shaimaa, like Hana said, its about feeling comfortable in your own skin and clothing and thats whats important. I think if i wore skirts and dresses more often they’d suit me more BUT i feel more comfortable in jeans + tunic sometimes or wide-legs + long cardigan, and so i wear them more often, plus pants are a lot more practical when you are running after a baby and a toddler! Whatever youre comfortable in is best!

Deniz added these pithy words on May 18 10 at 5:54 am

Masha’Allah, I enjoyed this piece. I hope Maysaa will be selling the trousers similar to the ones you were wearing :)
