Introductions

So welcome to my blog. I should introduce myself, my name is Hana Tajima-Simpson. We could play guess the nationality but my name’s a bit of a give away! Tajima (the Japanese daddy), Simpson (the English Mum) and Hana the Japanese but also, Alhamdulilah, the very Muslim part. I’m a designer who became Muslim about four years ago. I’m starting up my own company maysaa.com very soon inshAllah, which I’m doing with my lovely husband. I promise you this will be very different from anything else out there, think the high-street Islamified!

But this is what you really want to know

One of the first things I did when I became Muslim was to donate all my ‘un-Islamic’ clothes to my little sister, well, it seemed like a good idea at the time. Four years later and a fair few of those items have slipped back into my wardrobe along with other things I thought I’d never be able to wear. Don’t get me wrong, I love my simple abayas but this blog is for those days when you feel like stepping out in something a little different.

Being a Muslimah in a western country can be a bit daunting especially when it comes to the stares! I wanted to create something that would help Muslimah’s everywhere keep motivated, which is especially difficult if you live far far away from the big Muslim communities.

It’s also difficult when you have a high-street that doesn’t really do long skirts and loose long sleeved dresses, so this is where I come in. I’ve been editing my wardrobe, finding what works (with a lot of fashion mistakes along the way!), and designing and making clothes that match my religion and my lifestyle.

My Secret Motive…

From a designers perspective we can get very used to designing for our own body type. But us Muslimahs come in all sorts of different shapes and sizes (all beautiful of course) so I want to get to know what you like, and what you wear for your body type, because no other person knows your body better than you! I’m going to take everything you say back to my drawing board and inshAllah give you a collection that you helped to create!
