A Delayed Post

A totally Inappropriate post for the climate I’m in, ok hold on let me turn on the AC… I feel much less the fool now.  I had done this sketch some time ago because I loved the awkward mix of cultural references.  That bright printed head scarf peeking out from under the hood is magic.  One of my most favourite things is a sporty hoodie, or chunky knit over out and out extravagant layers, it manages to hold everything together.  That kind of thing reminds me of backstage runway photos where models are somewhere between their own clothes and their catwalk counterparts.  Really interesting juxtaposition, I feel like finding some wonderful examples of what I’m poorly describing… I can totally go do that right now.

Inspired by Style Bubble

The last in my Style Bubble illustration series, but it was actually the first sketch I did.  I love the textures and the candy colours, but I wanted to do a darker version, something stormy. You can see the other two here and here.  And don’t forget to check out Susie’s amazing blog Style Bubble!

Something totally different from the first sketch, I felt like doing something a bit livelier and the outfit dictated so I obliged!  The original image is a beauty too.  If you haven’t already, check out Susie’s blog Style Bubble- it is full of beautiful things.

Inspired by StyleBubble

Susie Lau from the style blog StyleBubble has the most inventive and imaginative style of any blogger I’ve come across.  I’ve been a fan since before I started blogging and she’s been a constant source of inspiration.

You have to love fashion and feel comfortable enough in your own style to stop such avant-garde pieces from wearing you, and she certainly owns her style.  If you ever look at those lists put together by fashion magazines you’re bound to find her.  She’s become something of an institution  and a huge style inspiration to many for good reason, and she was kind enough to let me do these illustrations and use her photos.  There are another two illustrations to come!

Giovanna Battaglia

Taking inspiration from the ever stylish Giovanna Battaglia, Fashion Editor of L’Uomo Vogue, Aifa has transformed her outfits in to more modest designs. I love her creativity and her taste is impeccable!

The Inspiration

I know this campaign is quite old but looking through old magazines reminded me how much I loved it. It’s such a strong image but the quirky details make it really special. So I decided to give it the hijabi sketchbook treatment. I didn’t really have to do much, just the long sleeves and headscarf. But it makes all the difference.

Painterly

After a short recess the Hijabi Sketchbook is back, the inspiration image was taken from the More Dash than Cash feature in September 09 British Vogue. I mostly chose it for the hat, which I know is a stupid reason, but I really like the paint splatter. The houndstooth makes a great focus for a maxi skirt (very English heritage), and the styling is great.

There wasn’t too much to adjust, just making it a long skirt and pulling the shirt sleeve down a few inches. With a polo neck underneath (and headscarf of course). I also put together a video demo of how I created the sketch. Much edited, it now fits into 3 and a half minutes of video! I’ll post it up next week inshAllah, I hope you like it.

The Inspiration

The chic mix of styles in this D&G collection really caught my attention, just the kind of eclectic outfitting that you don’t really get in conventional Muslimah outfits. So I thought I’d give it a go, this time my hijab version is a little rougher just pen (and pencil) to paper. Let me know what you think, do you prefer it to the usual Hijabi Sketchbook style?
