The Lengths We Go To

As requested by ‘City’ I’ll be putting up a few posts on maxi skirts, one of my favourite trends at the moment.  It can be tricky to style them but when you find a style that suits you you’ll find a friend for life.  Jersey maxi skirts are a great place to start for something more casual, and go for drapey to feel the swish at your feet à la Miss Bilson.  As usual celebrities have picked up on the trend- here are my favourites.

Hijabi style

You’ll just as easily find her in lingerie on a front cover (as I found out looking for pictures for this post). But here’s focusing on her M.O.D. style which I absolutely love. She really does do jersey so well, it’s the kind of casual outfitting that is so easily translatable to hijab style. Just throw over a headscarf and you’re done! Who’d have thought inspiration from a Victoria’s Secret model.

Celeb Style

For these fashionistas it’s all about prints and bright colours, whether it has a vintage feel or future fantastic optical prints a maxi dress can be a great canvas.

Understated Statement

This is such a beautiful and understated look, the full length skirt in particular is so elegant but manages to sit somewhere between evening and casual. The whole look works really well, just cover with a a cardigan or jacket and add a headscarf and you’ve got a beautiful muslimah outfit.

Modest Day Wear

For day wear go for her choice of wide leg jeans or soft tailored wide leg trousers (rather those super skinny leggings). Team it with a soft shirt, loose sweater or a simple t-shirt. Even if it’s not long sleeved you can do like she does and cover it over with a lightweight jacket or pretty cardigan. If you’re not a trousers sort of person go for a long skirt take a look at my artists impression here.

Maxi Dress Glamour

For a special occasion, or those times when you want to feel fancy the quickest course to modest elegance is with a maxi dress or abaya. With an abaya you can dress it up with a statement cropped jacket (something with structure). For the maxi dress choose a simple blazer or bolero. The base should be pretty simple, Palermo tends to start with a simple elegant base and builds it up with the accessories. I’m not talking lots of bling, just one key necklace or bracelet and of course a beautiful bag.

Style Analysis

In terms of her style, she loves draping with jersey or chiffon. In the evening she adds sparkle with… well sparkle, sequins or satin- but it’s never top to toe, just accenting the outfit. She does go for bold prints but doesn’t really mix them, instead, if she goes bold with the print she minimizes the accessories and tones down the extras. The key is in the detailing, little things like bows, belts, texture and fringing details make the look interesting without being a slave to trends.

In a sentence: Keep a simple basic outfit, experiment with statement jackets and jewellery and top it off with a big funky bag.

I saw this picture and had a little peek at some other photos. It turns out she actually has good taste (or a good stylist) when it comes to modest fashion. You haven’t seen the last of this lady…

Modest Outfit

I made this outfit hijab friendly for two reasons, 1) I love the outfit, how it’s casual but edgy and dressed up too. 2) I kind of wanted to see what Miss Bilson looked like as a Muslimah, very pretty it turns out. She has great style (or a great stylist) kind of a sleeker Olsen twins vibe. The reason it works so well as a Hijab outfit is because the tailoring is loose and very simple. She looks so cute.

Linked Look

I love this Roverto Cavalli dress. The shape is modest and the style is very elegant, but the link print is fun and a bit quirky. It’s quite similar to the Chris Benz look I posted the other day, but even more Muslimah friendly!
