So here’s something of an outfit post.  More of an experimentation with framing, I kind of like the renaissance portrait feel to it.  The trousers are actually a jumpsuit which I cut the top off.  It was sleeveless so it was just too many layers for me to bother with.  I actually much prefer them as trousers, and the raw edge where it’s been cut, is a really pretty detail.

It is also an experimentation with gif-ing which I had no idea how to do until just now, still can’t work out if it’s annoying or not… Annoying that I’m yet to figure out how to get it to work on here.  Check the tumblr to see it in action, ta da.

Style SOS

So here’s what I’ve been working on, it’s a TV show, a real life, all singing, all dancing* TV show.  Ever imagined what would happen if you put a fashion magazine into your television? Well imagine no longer, I’ve got it covered, Style Covered… (apologies, I couldn’t help myself.)  It’s going to be playfully D.I.Y. like a small child with glitter, only I’ll be a slightly larger child, with scissors, little adventures, and a magic wardrobe!  But there’s one thing missing…

Vogue does some awesome tutorials and this one comes from the king of D.I.Y. fashion Dr. Noki. I absolutely love it, Dr. Noki teaches you how to make the most of old prom style dresses. Amazing style, kind of reminds me of Chris Benz Spring 2009

Hijabi Friendly

This really is one of the best how to D.I.Y. tutorials I’ve ever come across, and because the dresses are made to measure you can make as many hijab friendly changes as you like. I might try something similar if I ever get the time, if you manage to beat me to it (likely) then I’d love to see your photos!

New Muslimah Style

For Muslims it can be hard to find a style that really reflects your personality whilst staying modest. So when I saw Duro Olowu’s Spring 2009 collection I really thought I’d stumbled across something fresh. It felt like he had a totally different view point and something exciting to inject into mainstream fashion. Then when I saw his Fall 09 collection I really fell in love with his artistic approach to design. Unlike a lot of ‘new style’ his collection is very wearable, and for us Hijab wearers very modest.

Do D.I.Y.

I’m hoping his style filters down to a more affordable high street level, but having said that you’re probably better off D.I.Y-ing it. More original, more personality for less money- that’s the kind of maths I like! When I get the time I’ll do I Duro Olowu inspired D.I.Y tutorial.

Muslim adaptions

Hmm, so maybe change the rum for something a little more Muslimah friendly. I’ve had a little look and seen lemon juice (1 tsp), coffee and tea (1/4 cup) used for home hair mask remedies, just don’t use you’re favourite towel! Why not experiment, if anything hijabi’s are certainly not afraid of a bad hair day.

A summery lip gloss gem from Vogue’s D.I.Y. section for you gorgeous girls. Maybe try this before putting on your favourite white t-shirt, or if you don’t fancy pink lips then just eat the berries and settle for a pink tongue. Hope you had a lovely weekend!

Vivienne Westwood on Friday Night with Jonathan Ross, reminding us why we love her

Back With a Message

Anyone else see Vivienne Westwood on Jonathan Ross? I thought it was amazing to see someone actually passionate about something. I think as a society the west and particularly England is really apathetic. She was talking about climate change and how we have to do something about it, in particular she talked about D.I.Y. fashion. Make things out of ‘tablecloths and curtains’ and saying to wear the clothes you have, rather than buying into fast fashion. It makes sense, just to save up for something special then you’ll love what you wear, and wear it over and over.

She also mentioned Prince Charles’ rainforest campaign. I had a little look and it looks like a good cause regardless of what you think of the man, she was asking everyone to sign up and petition to be presented at the next climate change agreement. So here’s props to the fashion legend a) for being so infectiously passionate about something and b) for doing something about it. You can do your bit by signing up on the Rainforest S.O.S website.
