“Yesterday I had photo-shoot with Sabrina, she came earlier at 7 in the morning and the total photos we had until she left at 5 in the afternoon is 1678! Now Sabrina has worn hijab. It makes me want to wear hijab too, insyallah . So, she wanted to have a photo-shoot in hijab.”

“We’d really like to have outfits in all black, and of course black shades. We’re always be a fan for this style. The white line we had and black eyeliner are from face painting! We are also like to find out inspiration from Hana’s blog. She has amazing style and her blog is really inspiring for the hijab style.”

Sarah Cant

Not too long ago I went to my mum’s exhibition, along side there was a summer exhibition with all sorts of lovely things. One thing stood out (I was doing all the wedding posts at the time). A stunning, and I mean jaw droppingly beautiful, bridal headdress by Sarah Cant. It had a price tag to match (over £1000 if I remember correctly) but you could see why. Every piece was handmade and put together in a cascade of white flowers. You could wear a really simple maxi dress or abaya because you would want to keep the attention firmly on this piece of wearable art.

Modest Feminine Fashion

The dress which acts as a base to this outfit is beautiful but too smart for everyday. No worries though, with a few styling tricks you can create an outfit fit for a day at a museum or a lovely shopping trip. I pinned the hem on one side to create an asymmetric shape and added quirky jewellery and bright shoes to dress it down. Add a simple headscarf, loose trousers, and a floral cardigan (twisted at the front) and you’re ready for action.

Back With a Message

Anyone else see Vivienne Westwood on Jonathan Ross? I thought it was amazing to see someone actually passionate about something. I think as a society the west and particularly England is really apathetic. She was talking about climate change and how we have to do something about it, in particular she talked about D.I.Y. fashion. Make things out of ‘tablecloths and curtains’ and saying to wear the clothes you have, rather than buying into fast fashion. It makes sense, just to save up for something special then you’ll love what you wear, and wear it over and over.

She also mentioned Prince Charles’ rainforest campaign. I had a little look and it looks like a good cause regardless of what you think of the man, she was asking everyone to sign up and petition to be presented at the next climate change agreement. So here’s props to the fashion legend a) for being so infectiously passionate about something and b) for doing something about it. You can do your bit by signing up on the Rainforest S.O.S website. Thin Line

Fashion and religion have always had a sort of strained, awkward relationship. The fashion world either exploits or patronises, they appear to be worlds apart which is why any image which combines the two will always be dramatic. This editorial may be more crass than high class but it’s interesting to know whether Muccia Prada was trying to push boundaries or just trying to make a pretty image, I think it succeeded on both counts.

Modest fashion: I love the casual, thrown together look. Because neat isn't always nice.

Love Loose

Slouchy oversized tees, long sleeved or under a shirt, are a perfect hijab friendly remedy to the hot weather. As far as keeping cool goes, you can’t get much better. This Japanese magazine was full of ideas and awesome prints. Wear them with really loose trousers or jeans, or if trousers aren’t your thing, wear over a long straight cut skirt or strappy maxi dress. You can even make them party perfect by wearing under a blazer or cropped jacket and a voluminous skirt. I’m thinking of an Alexa Chung outfit I saw a while back. Now if I can just find the correct issue of Vogue I’ll post it up. Shouldn’t be difficult, only 3 years issues to get through… lets start with January 2006 (could be a long night)!

The Row

This dress is from her own label The Row, and I absolutely love it. It’s simple and has a modest shape, it looks so elegant. She wore this attending “The Model as Muse: Embodying Fashion” Costume Institute Gala at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in May.

Quirky Cool

It’s seeing photos like this that make me very jealous of my sister being in Tokyo. I can already see things I want to try on and experiment with. It looks like a very Muslimah fashion friendly shop, with a whole lot of tunics. If you haven’t checked out Rei’s blog STYLEfromTOKYO I would definitely recommend it!

Japan style secrect

I have been informed of an untapped source of fashion in Japan. Charity, second hand, (or for our American sisters thrift stores) are a great resource for designer hijab friendly shopping. Wearing second hand is a little passe in some countries and in Japan most people like brand new, which is great for all of us brought up in hand-me-downs or feeling the pinch of recession! Top end designer gear can be found for a fraction of the price. Here are a few reasons to love Japanese thrift shopping:

1. Japanese style tends to be more modest than most, great news for hijabis

2. Japanese girls are always immaculate so you won’t get any tatty or badly marked clothes even second hand.

3. Because people in Japan tend not to buy second hand that means all the more for us! The same goes for any country where this is true, try any up-market area even in this country and you’re bound to find some real gems!

Starting Something

So it’s the beginning of a new month, and we’re days away from the MAYSAA photo shoot. For those of you who don’t know, I’m the designer for Maysaa.com which will inshAllah be launching soon.

I’ve been out shopping for accessories for the shoot, trying to get the look just right because you girls deserve nothing less! I’m excited and stressed and a little bit terrified all at the same time, and time is something that I could do with a little more of lately.

Make du’a that it all goes amazingly well inshAllah. You will be the first to know the outcome of the photo shoot!
