The Inspiration

I know this campaign is quite old but looking through old magazines reminded me how much I loved it. It’s such a strong image but the quirky details make it really special. So I decided to give it the hijabi sketchbook treatment. I didn’t really have to do much, just the long sleeves and headscarf. But it makes all the difference.

Painterly

After a short recess the Hijabi Sketchbook is back, the inspiration image was taken from the More Dash than Cash feature in September 09 British Vogue. I mostly chose it for the hat, which I know is a stupid reason, but I really like the paint splatter. The houndstooth makes a great focus for a maxi skirt (very English heritage), and the styling is great.

There wasn’t too much to adjust, just making it a long skirt and pulling the shirt sleeve down a few inches. With a polo neck underneath (and headscarf of course). I also put together a video demo of how I created the sketch. Much edited, it now fits into 3 and a half minutes of video! I’ll post it up next week inshAllah, I hope you like it.

The Inspiration

The chic mix of styles in this D&G collection really caught my attention, just the kind of eclectic outfitting that you don’t really get in conventional Muslimah outfits. So I thought I’d give it a go, this time my hijab version is a little rougher just pen (and pencil) to paper. Let me know what you think, do you prefer it to the usual Hijabi Sketchbook style?

As often happens with blogging you can really get carried away with a subject, in this case Miss Palermo (I had no idea who she was before now). I saw this picture and had a little peek at some other photos. It turns out she actually has good taste (or a good stylist) when it comes to modest fashion. You haven’t seen the last of this lady…

The Inspiration

Fall 2009

A lot of designers have gone for the grown up, more refined look with quirky details this Fall. It’s a look that is great for hijab style, you can wear a simple abaya and dress it up with playful accessories. I am quite liking the capped woolly hat look, very hijab friendly. The other great thing Prada has played with is this one bold colour with a mix of textures (velvet, cabled knit, leather and a soft satin sheen); another way of adding interest to a modest outfit. Here’s how we made the look a little more like Islamic fashion:

Modest Outfit

I made this outfit hijab friendly for two reasons, 1) I love the outfit, how it’s casual but edgy and dressed up too. 2) I kind of wanted to see what Miss Bilson looked like as a Muslimah, very pretty it turns out. She has great style (or a great stylist) kind of a sleeker Olsen twins vibe. The reason it works so well as a Hijab outfit is because the tailoring is loose and very simple. She looks so cute.

I love the Fendi style at the moment, the cut away pattern and the light layers are so pretty. Very chic but with a quirky touch, gorgeous! The layers as always are a Muslim Fashion favourite, with the accessories packing a fun punch.

Midnight Meeting

The Givency Couture collection for Spring 09 was full of inspirational ideas for Muslimahs. You’ll see more of that in the next part of the Muslim Bridal Guide but as a little appetizer here’s a stunning example of just what Riccardo Tisci can do with a piece of fabric. The draping is so elegant, it makes me think of a secret midnight wedding. I didn’t have to do much to make it hijab friendly, but it was fun to do!
