Hijab Style

This is a post for Uzz who is looking for alternatives to heels with jeans. She described her style as “…a little tomboyish but with a feminine twist.” which is perfect for me because it’s what I love! So here are three options to work with.

Kitten Heels and Boyfriend Jeans

Option 1

For loose jeans you’ve got a couple of options, wide leg flares or slouchy boyfriend style denim. I quite like putting together quite a masculine look with really feminine details so the kitten heels work very well indeed.

Flats and denim

Option 2

Ballet pump style flats are a life saver when it comes to being on your feet all day. These moccasin style ones work well with almost any outfit, they’re smart enough for most occasions but if you want a bit more glamour then go for ballet pumps.

Converse and Jeans

Option 3

Possibly my favourite shoes, there’s not much I don’t wear them with. But they do go rather well with slouchy wide-leg jeans, and give an edgy casual look. Maybe I’m biased but out of the three I thought I saved the best till last.

Silver Lining

There’s nothing more satisfying than a crisp white garment, and head to toe can only really be done in Summer (water marks on hems are not a good look!). But we do have to be careful when it comes to summer sun through a skirt beautifully illustrated by the pic above. But you can always attach a lining, it doesn’t even have to be made well or neatly. A handy way to wear semi sheer white clothes or one of those floaty kaftans that are everywhere in the sales now.

Modest Feminine Fashion

The dress which acts as a base to this outfit is beautiful but too smart for everyday. No worries though, with a few styling tricks you can create an outfit fit for a day at a museum or a lovely shopping trip. I pinned the hem on one side to create an asymmetric shape and added quirky jewellery and bright shoes to dress it down. Add a simple headscarf, loose trousers, and a floral cardigan (twisted at the front) and you’re ready for action.

Love Loose

Slouchy oversized tees, long sleeved or under a shirt, are a perfect hijab friendly remedy to the hot weather. As far as keeping cool goes, you can’t get much better. This Japanese magazine was full of ideas and awesome prints. Wear them with really loose trousers or jeans, or if trousers aren’t your thing, wear over a long straight cut skirt or strappy maxi dress. You can even make them party perfect by wearing under a blazer or cropped jacket and a voluminous skirt. I’m thinking of an Alexa Chung outfit I saw a while back. Now if I can just find the correct issue of Vogue I’ll post it up. Shouldn’t be difficult, only 3 years issues to get through… lets start with January 2006 (could be a long night)!

Bright Bohemian

So I’m definitely not Nicole Richie’s biggest fan, but she has seemingly blossomed into a trend setter going from trashy to boho chic. When I came across this photo two things stood out to me…

First off the feminine but modest shape of the top, which would look equally gorgeous over loose trousers. It is hijab friendly and really striking. I don’t know if I’d go for such a bright colour, but in this instance it’s more girly than garish and the hint of print breaks up the colour and adds richer tones.

Secondly was the head piece. I can just imagine this being worn over a hijab, I love that detail and I guess it’s these details that take her into trend setter status.

There are times in a Muslimah’s life when trousers make life a little easier. Whether you wear them under an Abaya or with a top trousers can be practical, stylish, and modest.

As part of the MAYSAA collection I’ve been working out how to make trousers work for Muslimahs. The key is in the tailoring, the tricky part is the area over the hips. Most high-street trousers that are loose enough through the leg are tight over the hips and bum, so a long top is the only way not to show your figure.

Flat Fronted

Flat fronted means that they have to pleats or gathers at the waist. Flat fronted loose trousers are hard to find. Louis Vuitton and Missoni have both achieved a loose silhouette over the hips by dropping the crotch slightly lower and cutting it similar to a skirt in that it flares slightly out from the waist.

Trousers with pleats at the waistband often mean that they will be loose over the hips because of that extra bit of fabric. Luckily this style is very much in vogue at the moment, and is my favourite style.

Gone are the days where pleats spelled old fashioned fuddy duddy styling. Now designers have revamped the silhouette and created a very hijab friendly trend.
