Now this girl has a ton of attitude, her blog HoneyPokapoka is pretty darn awesome too.  Love the eclectic styling, and her use of colour, she’s just uberously cool. The fact she shares a love of Alexa Chung, Daisy Lowe and Freja Beha Erichson kinda proves my point no? p.s. I stumbled across this gorgeous girl when she left a comment on a post here.  She has her own blog ‘Bits of Beads’ with a lot more pics.  I love how she puts her outfits together in a kind of quirky way.  Never afraid of colour and print she’s inspired me to find a bold print headscarf.  Lovely.

“Yesterday I had photo-shoot with Sabrina, she came earlier at 7 in the morning and the total photos we had until she left at 5 in the afternoon is 1678! Now Sabrina has worn hijab. It makes me want to wear hijab too, insyallah . So, she wanted to have a photo-shoot in hijab.”

“We’d really like to have outfits in all black, and of course black shades. We’re always be a fan for this style. The white line we had and black eyeliner are from face painting! We are also like to find out inspiration from Hana’s blog. She has amazing style and her blog is really inspiring for the hijab style.”

The Search

Whilst in Paris I did briefly look in to the possibility of buying shades, you may know I am very indecisive about sunglasses. I have a pair I wore years ago before I became Muslim but tried them with my hijab and it looked really terrible. So searching for a shape to suit me meant looking at girls with similar faces and see what they were wearing.

My conclusion:

Big is Best

Too round means I look bug eyed

Too angular or rectangular doesn’t suit my lovely round head!

So these were my variations on a theme:

I would love your opinions in helping me choose! Although lets face it, I probably won’t be needing them for another 8 months. If you have any tips on sunglasses and face shape then I’d love to hear them. Just leave all your comments below!

When I See a Muslim Woman I Feel…

We have a common bond without ever speaking to each other. Whether or not she is wearing hijab,

We share the characteristic of humility because we know that Allah is above us.

We know that He is always watching, and so we try to be respectful in all the actions which we enact.

When I meet a covered Muslim woman, I consider her to be bold because she presents her belief for all to see.

I See

… a strong, modest yet outgoing woman who is not afraid to wear hijab. She can show her individuality & beliefs and is proud to do so. I see my Sisters, I see my community, I see hope for the future.

To me, when I see another Sister my heart fills with joy, I know that no matter where we come from, what language we speak, what our individual lives may hold – we are still conected, and are Sisters!
Inshallah may Allah grant us all peace and prosperity in all areas of our life, expecially in Jena, where I pray to see my Sister again.

Comme des Garçons

Rei Kawakubo, the designer behind Comme des Garçons has a strong aesthetic and a bold take on fashion. Spring/Summer 2009 was not the first or the last time she’s played with the idea of hiding faces. It’s great to see designers exploring the boundaries of beauty. The Japanese influence can be seen in the bold but simple shapes and colours and in the experimental look of the models.

Islamic Interest

As a Muslimah it’s interesting to see different ways of covering up even if these are more than a little extreme! But in particular a lot of these looks are opposite but weirdly similar to what hijabi’s wear. The wigs were amplified and the faces covered, or in the case of Maison Martin Margiela the face was treated almost like an object and took away the features. The result however was that, much like a Muslim woman, outsiders are confronted with an idea of beauty that is utterly unconventional. I guess we’re both breaking boundaries from totally different angles.
